Waffle weave on jacquard loom (2014)

Jacquardvävd Våffelbindning Matilda Dominique 2014

Matilda Dominique Jacquard weave

A piece of weaving is both a simple and an extremely complex construction. When the structure of the weave is enlarged, both of these aspects become clear. The simplicity and obvious grid around which all weave patterns are built up is visible in the waffle weave. This weave technique also creates a three-dimensional structure. My ambition with this work is partly to challenge the limits of what is technically possible to weave before the three-dimensional form collapses, and partly to illustrate the paradox that is embodied in the weave. Waffle Weave on Jacquard Loom is a study of a specific weave technique and how its three-dimensional form is influenced by being enlarged, and how the material acts when its structure and scale are altered.

Nominated to the Swedish jury award Ung Svensk Form 2014/2015

The jury motivation:
“The weaving is a play of light, a richly detailed manifestation that asserts itself in all its modesty and creates various experiences depending on your perspective. Close up, we associate it with the illustrations in the old satirical MAD magazine.”
